O Great Redeemer Production This Weekend

We often assume that the trials and troubles we face are done so alone.  We choose to face our problems in isolation.  But we don’t ever suffer alone; ever. There is a solidarity that can be found between people with common sufferings.  You are not alone.  You don’t face your trials by yourself.  You see as quick as we are to blame God for the pain and suffering asking where He was during our struggles; He is just as quick to remind us that we are not alone; He became flesh and suffered and died with us.  Emmanuel: God with Us.

Come Join us for this Unique Easter Experience exploring the the story of our suffering. O Great Redeemer: Our Suffering Is Nailed to the Cross.  The Crossing Church Worship Choir will be preforming and leading us through this journey together with songs by Audrey Assad, Hillsong, Paul Baloche, Matt Maher and more.

You will not want to miss it!

Lessons thus far from Lent

Lessons thus far from Lent….

-a new perspective
-spending time in prayer softens my heart to love people more effectively
-the book of Brian is vastly different than God’s Word

God has been teaching me in new and fresh ways, that His plan and purpose for me will never allow for being a slacker or getting comfortable. Opportunities abound every day to be the witness He wants me to be. People are everywhere…struggling, hurting, and looking for someone to care enough to walk with them through this journey. I now realize the old way prior to Lent was okay, but that this new way is far more pleasing. Some of the book of Brian had crept in; those things that I could do without God’s help. I could kick in the cruise control and rely on my own strength, knowledge, and experience. What He wants from me is less of me and more of Him. God help us all, and He will.

Pastor Brian

Relationslips

I have had an incredible response to this sermon series, most of it positive in fact.  We spent a couple of weeks on the covenant of marriage, last weekend on the reality that my relationships are much healthier when my proximity to the Father is near and dear to my heart.  This weekend, with God’s help, we will tackle the topic of “Whatever” parenting.  I was stunned and convicted recently after reading in a parenting magazine that it is a no brainer for parents in this day and time to encourage and push their kids in such things as sports, music lessons, dance, etc… Yet when it comes to spiritual things on most parents priority lists these fit in when they can be squeezed in between all the other “givens”.  I know I am the Pastor but doesn’t that seem somewhat messed up?

The Bible is full of great parenting truths, building a solid foundation for our kids to build on, what a privilege and responsibility, and with God’s help – WE CAN DO IT.

God doesn’t play favorites…

I used to jog with a guy in Oklahoma who loved to argue with me about how unfair some parts of the Bible were. The guy who buried his one talent, the older brother in the prodigal story who gets “hosed” (his word) for doing the right thing. We would go round and round til one day I told him, “God’s grace and love is not fair, get over it.”

God’s grace is for everyone, no matter who you are, what you have done, or what you deserve. God doesn’t play favorites. His love is real and full of forgiveness and grace no matter what.  If it wasn’t for that we would all be in BIG trouble, including my running buddy.

There’s something about Mary…

There has always been something about Mary that fascinates me at this time of the year.  When I think about the fears that she had to face; criticism, uncertainty, inadequacy, and change, I get more and more impressed with this young lady’s follow through. For her to hear from the angel “nothing is impossible with God” and for her to respond “I am the Lord’s servant” – that is so impressive to me.

I wonder how I would have reacted. Probably something along the lines of “Mr. Angel you are kidding right? Why me? What I am going to tell Joe? What are others going to say?” Mary seems, however, to be unflappable. She wants nothing more than to please God – who cares about anything else – if that’s what God wants, than that is what He is gonna get, for I am the Lord’s servant.

I hope that my faith can grow to that matter-of-fact, without tons of questions and uncertainty accompanied by fear.  As I face 2012 I want to be the Lord’s servant, and honestly nothing else really matters.

I am anticipating looking into Mary’s life a little bit more on Christmas day at our one and only service at 10:45. Come join us.

10 Things I Love about Christmas

  1. The angel’s phrase to Mary – “For nothing is impossible with God.” How many of us are facing obstacles that seem insurmountable? Let’s take our limited focus off of the mountain and put it back on God.
  2. I love the family communion time at our Christmas Eve services. I get choked up every time when I look out and see families breaking bread together.
  3. Reading the Christmas story as a family on Christmas morning and looking into the faces of my kids and seeing a love for God and one another.
  4. Watching football with my Dad.
  5. Delivering a basket of goodies to a family who needs a little Christmas pick-me-up.
  6. Watching Mrs. Claus (Kim) enjoy every moment of giving gifts to those she loves.
  7. Snacks, snacks, and more snacks.
  8. Sharing the joy of the season with my church family.
  9. Watching my kids hug my Mom (granny) when she shows up from Tennessee.
  10. Remembering, once again, that the baby changes everything.

None of our situations are perfect but there is so much to be thankful for at this time of the year. Take the time to reflect, laugh, hug, shed a tear and remember Jesus showed up for you and He loves you.

Will I Notice?

Luke 8:20 NLT- “The shepherds went back to their flocks, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen.”

What had they heard and seen? Good news that will bring great joy to ALL people – The SAVIOR-MESSIAH-LORD has come to earth.

OK – at the risk of sounding like “that Pastor”, do we emphasize the good news that brings great joy at this time of the year, or do we get distracted?

I love Christmas. Kim (aka Mrs. Claus) has brought into my life multiple Christmas traditions – Lights on the house, reading of the Christmas story on Christmas morning, cold Christmas Cokes, adopting a family in need, the Polar Express movie, and many, many, more.

In all that tradition I don’t want to get “dulled” to the emptiness in the eyes of many that are all around me. The question is, will I notice? Will I notice that checker at the grocery store who is trying to get enough hours in to make a little extra money for gifts for her kids or that neighbor down the street who you haven’t seen much of lately but you know they are struggling or that family member who is getting more and more disconnected.

The shepherds’ encounter with the Christ child “rocked their world”. It changed everything, their view of God and His affect on them, and their enthusiasm to spread the good news.

I am challenged once again this Christmas season, to look around, see what God see’s, enjoy the traditions, the kids and choir programs at church, Christmas Eve services (which I love by the way), but to also be ready to share some good news that will bring GREAT JOY to those around me that are putting on the fake smile and hurting.  This is a great time of the year to invest in someone else, look around; they may be closer than you think.

Thankful…

What am I thankful for? Hmmmmmmm… My Savior and Lord, my incredible wife of 27 years, 4 great kids, family, the opportunity to be the Pastor at the Crossing Church, friends here and around the country, Green Bay is 10-0, Tim Tebow is shaking up the Broncos and the NFL, the Word of God, the fact that God doesn’t give up on us, cranberries, donuts, Chinese food, and fruit slices. How is that for RANDOM???

Take the time to reflect, smile and enjoy the many blessings of this Thanksgiving and Christmas season. I will be starting a series this weekend – The Light of Bethlehem Still Shines – a great opportunity to invite someone looking for “real” light.

GO

Did Jesus have a vision statement for His Global Church? I believe He did….

Matthew 28: 18-20 NLT
Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations,[a] baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

We obviously need and want to be about the things Jesus was all about so that His vision becomes our vision. As a body of believers we are mandated to “GO” and continue to reach people.
